Sugar vs. Cocaine

We all know cake, cookies and ice cream aren't doing us any good.  And yet, eating sugar gives us that euphoria that scientists liken to sensation of lust. But just like lust, it's usually fleeting and addictive. That sugar high crashes and your body craves more to get back to the high. Experts are now saying that sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine! 

“Processed foods made from sugar and white flour like cookies, cakes, crackers, and breads contain loads of sugar - one reason we’re eating more sugar than ever before. Consumption has increased 50% in the last 30 years”, says Dr. Jeffrey Morrison. “Sugar itself is inflammatory and when you eat a lot of these foods, your body produces insulin in excess, which increases inflammation. Insulin is a growth hormone, so too much of it in the bloodstream can also lead to metabolic syndrome, a precursor to diabetes.” While it’s not a definite you’re going to develop diabetes, there are still a number of other health risks - heart disease being at the top of that list. 

The scariest thing about sugar addiction is that we don’t really know how it’s affecting us in the long term, and we are soon to find out. The next time you’re at the grocery store, take a peek at the label of what you’re buying.  If you see high fructose corn syrup, or anything you can’t pronounce, put it back.
