Turmeric's Medicinal Magic

Today’s society is finally catching up to what holistic Ayurvedic practices have done for thousands of years. Arthritis, cancer, IBS, autoimmune diseases, and many more illnesses plague us. We are inflamed, sick, and out of touch.

Let’s talk about turmeric, the sunshine-colored root in the ginger family that has some medicinal magic. It’s anti-inflammatory properties and high levels of antioxidants help repair damage and ward off ailments in the body. You can find turmeric in our moroccan eggs, our salads and soups, our smoothies and Neighborhood Juices. At Nourish, we love this plant not only for the aesthetics it adds to our dishes, but the healing properties it contains as well.

Curcumin, the major compound in turmeric is not absorbed well through out the body on its own. There are practices to aid absorption that Nourish has put into place to change that.

  1. Sprinkle some pepper, which contains piperine, improving the bioavailability of turmeric.

  2. Heat it up, in doing so, curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties are more readily released.

  3. Add some fat as curcumin is fat soluble.

  4. Eat quercetin-rich foods such as onions.
